APP Scam Recovery – How Oakbridge Claims Can Help
APP scams can be extremely complex, particularly where fraudsters operate from overseas, funds are transferred through multiple accounts or jurisdictions, and assets are difficult for law enforcement to trace or recover.
At Oakbridge Claims, we understand how complicated these cases can become. Over the years, we have developed relationships with professionals and organisations internationally, including legal professionals, regulatory contacts and other specialists who may be able to assist with complex cross-border cases.
New UK APP Scam Reimbursement Rules
Since 7 October 2024, new UK reimbursement rules have provided significantly greater protection for victims of Authorised Push Payment (APP) scams. For eligible payments made through Faster Payments or CHAPS, banks and other payment service providers are generally required to reimburse qualifying victims, subject to the rules and applicable exceptions. The standard maximum reimbursement is currently £85,000 per claim, although payment providers can choose to reimburse more.
This means that if you have been the victim of an APP scam, you may have a right to seek reimbursement from your bank even though you personally authorised the payment.
How Oakbridge Claims Can Help
We can help you understand what steps to take and how to present your circumstances to your bank.
- Explaining the APP scam reimbursement process.
- Helping you understand whether your circumstances may fall within the reimbursement rules.
- Explaining what information and evidence your bank may require.
- Helping you structure the information needed to make a clear claim.
- Advising you on the next steps if your bank rejects or limits your claim.
- Where appropriate, referring complex cases to suitable international partners or specialist professionals.
Our objective is to help you maximise your opportunity of recovering as much of your lost money as possible through the appropriate recovery or reimbursement process.
Don't Assume Your Money Is Gone
The fact that a scammer was overseas, the money was transferred through other accounts, or the criminal cannot easily be identified does not automatically mean that you have no options.
If you have lost money through an APP scam, the first step is to report the fraud to your bank and make a reimbursement claim as soon as possible. The UK Payment Systems Regulator recommends contacting your bank immediately after discovering the scam.
We are not limited by jurisdiction.
Where appropriate, we can help clients explore different recovery routes and work with international professionals and specialist partners where cases involve overseas transactions, multiple jurisdictions or complex financial structures.
Our approach is to look at the whole case, rather than relying on a single recovery route. Depending on the circumstances, this may include pursuing a claim against the relevant bank or payment provider, seeking assistance from appropriate legal or regulatory professionals, or exploring international recovery options. Our objective is simple:
To help you pursue every realistic avenue available and maximise the amount of your lost money that can potentially be recovered.
